As a child, I have fond memories of visiting my grandpa's sister, my Aunt Frances, every Sunday for dinner. She would always make a huge pot of "sugo" and meatballs, served over spaghetti, along with fried chicken, salad, and bread. I loved going to her house, it always smelt so good and there was always so much family there. Us kids weren't allowed in the kitchen, but I loved playing outside on her back steps that led up to her kitchen. She grew Italian Cucuzza Squash on her chain-link fence in her back yard. She would stew them up with tomatoes and garlic and serve over pasta. She also would slice them and batter them with breadcrumbs and fry them up (similar to fried green tomatoes).
After my husband and I married, we found a local market in Houston, that sold cucuzza. We couldn't believe it! I was so excited to find this squash that I remembered so fondly as a child. I saved seeds and the following year we began growing our own cucuzza in our backyard garden. Over twenty years now, and we are still growing cucuzza every year. Now that we moved to a small town and my husband is retired, we have decided to sell some of our abundant crop of cucuzza to our community, for all to enjoy.
We are native Texans, born and raised in Houston, TX. Last year, as we approached retirement, we decided to leave the crazy, big city and retire in a small town. We have always loved the Brazos Valley area, so we found a small property in Navasota, TX. We are enjoying the small-town life and our friendly Navasota community. We LOVE it here!
